Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-14

Listen to the sermon

When Jesus walked the earth, Roman rulers used to seal their letters with hot wax. They would roll up their letters and place a drop of hot wax on the edge to keep it rolled up. Then they would press down on the hot wax with their signet ring. The impression from the signet ring would demonstrate that the letter came from a specific Roman ruler. It was their way of signing a letter.

Jesus tells us that when we believe in Him, we are ‘marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit’. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit. This identifies us as belonging to God as His children. As such, we can expect an inheritance of love, joy, peace and eternal life.

Baptism is an outward sign of being ‘marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit’. During baptism, God marks us as His children. As we remember our baptism, we also remember that we are beneficiaries of the love, joy, peace and eternal life that come with being God’s children. We need to always remember this. It will help us to be more thankful during the good times and more hopeful/positive during the bad times.
