And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." Summary and Purpose Summary: Jesus Christ is ‘God in the flesh’. He is fully God and fully human. Jesus is God showing us how to be a perfect human. This means that if you want to know God’s character, look at Jesus. Look at what he said and did when he walked this earth. One of the best ways to get a penetrating look at what Jesus was like is to study the last 7 statements he made while dying on the cross. This will reveal some of God’s character to us. By doing this, we will find that God is a very good and loving God. The first thing that Jesus said was, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” This demonstrates his love for all people, to include those who mistreat him. Purpose: To help the congregation to better understand God’s character and to encourage the congregation to emulate that character. The Sermon I. Introduction: Intense and challenging situations bring out a person’s real character 1. Thomas Paine understood this: He wrote in his pamphlet ‘Common Sense’:
“These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine
patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country…” He expected
the American Revolution to reveal the true character of people.
2. When sacrifice and courage become necessary, people’s real characters are
revealed. Some are revealed to be noble while others wanting.
3. My character was revealed when I went through the U.S. Army Ranger School
4. Jesus’ character was revealed when he endured the agony of the cross.
5. The first thing Jesus said was “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they
do” (Luke 23:34)
II. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”: This statement reveals three
things about Jesus’ character
1. Jesus was concerned about others, even in the midst of his own suffering
2. Jesus loves all people, even the ones who are torturing him
3. Jesus can understand a person’s circumstance
III. Remember, Jesus is ‘God in the flesh’. What is revealed about Jesus is also what is
revealed about God. This shows that God is :
1. Concerned about us
2. Offers us his forgiveness because he loves us even when we sin.
3. Understands what we are going through.
IV. How should we respond to this type of God? 1. With repentance
2. With faith
3. If ‘God in the flesh’ loves us enough to say, “Father, forgive them; for they know
not what they do”, then we should respond by turning from our sins and trusting
God.
