John 19:26-27

Listen to the sermon

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple. “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

Summary and Function

Summary: Jesus is God in the flesh, fully God and fully human. He’s the heart of God with flesh wrapped around it. To know Jesus and his character is to know God and God’s character. We can know Jesus’ character by looking at what he said while dying on the cross.

While dying on the cross, Jesus made arrangements for his mother to be taken care of. In the midst of his pain and suffering, he took care of his momma. What does this say about Jesus?

Purpose: To help the congregation to better understand God’s love and to respond to that love with repentance and faith

The Sermon

I. Introduction: Fidelity to parents

1. Most people claim to love their parents

2. In the Army, single soldiers will list their parents as their primary beneficiary on
their life insurance

3. Wounded soldiers often think of their parents prior to dying

4. All this is good, especially when you consider the fifth commandment, “Honor your
mother and father”

5. Jesus gave us a great example of how we should honor our parents

  • As a child, he obeyed his parents - Luke 2:51: “Then he [Jesus] went down with them [his parents] and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them”
  • When he was dying on the cross, he made sure his mother would be taken care of – John19:26-27

II. John 19:26-27

1. By the time Jesus went to the cross, Mary was most likely a widow. Luke 2 is the
last time Joseph is mentioned. He drops out of the story. He most likely died. The
bottom line is that Mary is without a husband and is about to lose her oldest son
(Jesus).
  • In that day and age, women were generally dependant on men for their welfare.
  • A widow was at a big disadvantage in this society. They needed someone to support them
2. So Jesus looked at his mother and the apostle John (John is the disciple whom
Jesus loved.), and said, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple.
“Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
  • Jesus basically said, “John, take care of my momma! Make sure she is provided for and loved.”
  • In the midst of his suffering, Jesus was concerned about his Momma!

III. As we ponder the significance of what Jesus said, let’s remember who he is….

1. Jesus is God in the flesh…the heart of God with flesh wrapped around it…Jesus is
God showing us how to be a perfect human

2. Scriptural testimony that Jesus is God in the flesh

  • Jesus is repeatedly referred to as Lord throughout the New Testament. Only God is referred to as Lord
  • Jesus was a good Jewish man, yet he allowed people to worship Him – Matthew 14:33, Matthew 28:9 & Matthew 28:17
  • In John 1: 1-14 Jesus is clearly described as the word become flesh. It says that the “…word was with God, and the word was God…”
  • In John 8:58 Jesus claims the name “I am”. This is the name God gave himself in Exodus.
  • Jesus forgave sins. Only God can forgive sins – Mark 2:1-12
  • Philippians 2:6-11 describes Jesus’ willingness to give up equality with God. The only way to be equal with God is to be God.
  • The Apostle Paul believes Jesus to be God. He wrote in Titus 2:11-13, “For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”
3. According to the Scriptural witness, Jesus is God in the flesh. This means two
things:
  • God did not send another created being to suffer and die for us. He himself went to earth as a human to suffer and die for us
  • We can know God’s character by looking at how Jesus lived his life as a human.

IV. So, what does Jesus teach us by showing concern for the welfare of his Momma?

1. Once again, we see Jesus’ concern for the welfare of others even in the midst of
suffering. This demonstrates God’s extreme love for us. This is the main theme
throughout this series.
2. We also see Jesus’ willingness to fulfill his obligations to others. As the oldest son,
he was responsible for his Mom. (There’s no mention of his earthly father,
Joseph. He most likely passed away.) Even though he was God in the flesh,
Jesus wasn’t so high and mighty that he neglected his duties as a son. This is the
example for us to follow.
V. Conclusion: How do we respond to the God who is revealed by Jesus Christ? With
repentance and faith.
